Wired LAN
Introduction
The wired network (LAN) has come along considerably since it was first implemented in the average organisation, with typical speeds of 1gb, 10gb and 100gb now achievable. Whilst wireless networks (Wi-Fi) have gained in popularity, it should be remembered that it is the wired network that is the backbone of your infrastructure, and forms one of the most critical parts to your IT systems.
However, just because 100gb ethernet is available doesn't mean you need it everywhere. Companies all too often buy the fastest possible equipment 'just in case', but are usually poorly advised or with limited networking experience.
- Micro/Small Companies - These are usually based in a small office with up to about 10 computers, and don't require the same performance and complexity as a larger company. Several vendors now offer cloud-based management of network devices which offers better monitoring and support options.
- Medium/Large Companies - These usually have more than one office or spread over multiple locations, have a server infrastructure or data centre and require the extra performance and functionallity offered by higher end vendors, such as a layered network design and redundancy.

- Which vendors do you recommend?Jovasi Technology are a vendor agnostic company, and will work with you preferred vendor. However, we do recommend some vendors over others (depending on the budget available), such as Cisco, Aruba, Ubiquity.
- We have already have a network in place. Can you help?Yes of course. Whilst our network designers always prefer to be involved from the start, we have worked with companies who have already started to configure their networks.
- Do we need Power over Ethernet (PoE)?Whilst you may not need it at the moment, there is no doubt that ever more devices are being powered by PoE, such as access points and VoIP phones. If you think there is a chance you may use PoE devices in the next 4-5 years, then it is certainly worth considering PoE based switches.
- What is a managed switch?Managed switches is a type of network switch than can be re-configured (usually with a web browser or SSH connection), and it is possible to change almost any aspect of it. We recommend that any organisation with more than a handful of devices uses managed switches.
