Cyber Essentials

Introduction

Cyber Essentials is a UK Government supported scheme, run by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to help organisations prepare and protect themselves against possible cyber attacks. The scheme concentrates on five fundamental areas that organisations should have in place such as firewalls, users and malware protection.
Identify threats to your organisation from cyber attacks.
Show your customers you take cyber security seriously.
Comply with local authority & government requirements.

Cyber Essentials Process

The Cyber Essentials process involves a self-assessment, which must be completed by the customer, and then an onsite audit if pursuing the Cyber Essentials Plus certification.

The Cyber Essentials basic certification must be achieved prior to continuing to the Cyber Essentials Plus certification.

The Cyber Essentials certification is valid for 12 months, and must be renewed annually. Organisations who do not renew annually will be removed from the list of certified organisations on the NCSC's website. Jovasi Technology will remind you prior to the renewal date, so that you have adequate time to re-certify.

If you require additional technical support, or have multiple locations that need to be certified, then please specify these during the purchase process.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does the process involve? The Cyber Essentials basic scheme involves the completion of a self-assessment. We have prepared a guide to help you here. If you pass, then you will be presented with a certificate. If you fail, then we can help you get things in place to re-submit.

The Cyber Essentials Plus scheme also involves the completion of the self-assessment (and a successful pass). Following this, we will visit your organisation to conduct a vulnerability scan and verify your assessment.
  • How long does the process take?Once you have submitted your self-assessment, we can process it in about 1-2 days. The Cyber Essentials Plus process then involves a 1 day visit, which can be arranged to suit your organisation, and the process completed in another 1-2 days.
  • How long do the certifications last? The certifications should be renewed annually in order to be listed on the NCSC’s website.
  • How much does it cost if we fail?If you fail the basic certification, then we do not charge for re-submitting once.

If you fail the plus certification, then we do not charge to redo the external vulnerability scan or for re-submitting. However, we may charge for revisiting your site to redo the internal vulnerability scan.
  • Do you provide additional technical help?Yes, we can provide technical support to help you get things in place prior to the self-assessment. Please see our bolt-ons section for more details.
  • Do I need the plus certification? The plus certification lets you demonstrate to customers that you take the security of your systems seriously. It may also be required if you hold sensitive data or provide services to local authorities or the government.
  • What if our organisation has multiple locations? You can include these too (additional costs may be incurred if a visit is required to these locations), but you may exclude them from the scope of the certification.
  • Can we upgrade from an existing basic certification? This may be possible, but it is likely that new vulnerability scans will be required.

NCSC Cyber Advisor

Cyber Advisor is a targeted consultancy scheme aimed primarily at small organisations. Such organisations often lack in-house expertise or easy access to qualified people who can help them to secure their networks. And, because they often have limited time and funds to invest in security, it can be hard for a small organisation, whether it's a business, a school or a charity, to know where to focus what resources they do have.

Every Cyber Advisor must pass an independent assessment - the catchily titled Certificate of Competence in Cyber Essentials Implementation. The assessment tests an individual’s knowledge and understanding of the Technical Controls, their competence in doing practical, hands-on IT configuration and support, and their ability to understand and work with small organisations.

Jovasi Technology was part of the Cyber Advisor pilot scheme and our security consultant was one of the first in the UK to be awarded the NCSC Cyber Advisor certification.
