Wi-Fi & Guest Portals

Introduction

The growth of Wi-Fi (both at home and in the workplace) has grown exponentially, and is now considered as a must-have feature for users to do their work. Publically available Wi-Fi access (usually free of charge) is also fast becoming a customer expectation. Organisations who do not offer these, may in the future find themselves at a serious competitive disadvantage.
The availability of cheap off-the-shelf Wi-Fi products means that consumers have a wide range to choose from. However, without proper planning and design, you might soon find out that your Wi-Fi network doesn't meed the demands of your users and visitors, and will cause more problems than it solves.

Industries

It doesn't matter what type of industry you are in, we can help you design and implement a reliable Wi-Fi network: For a medium/large/public space installation, We recommend conducting a site survey before installing a Wi-Fi network to ensure it is optimised for coverage and performace. A survey gives a good estimation as to the quantity and placement of access points prior to installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which vendors do you recommend?Jovasi Technology are a vendor agnostic company, and will work with you preferred vendor. However, we do recommend some vendors over others (depending on the budget available), such as Cisco, Aruba, Ubiquity.
  • We have already have Wi-Fi in place. Can you help?Yes of course. Whilst our network designers always prefer to be involved from the start, we have worked with companies who have already started to configure their Wi-Fi.
  • Do we need Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches? Most Wi-Fi access points do support PoE, so if you are looking to use more than a handful of access points, then a PoE capable switch is worthwhile.
  • What standards should we consider?Wi-Fi standards are being constantly updated to provide more features and better performance. The current common standard is 801.11ac, which can provide about 1.3gbs speeds. A new standard is in the process of being finalised called 802.11ax, which promises over 10gbs speeds.
  • What is a guest portal? This is a page that visitors/guests are directed to when they try to connect to your Wi-Fi network. It provides a 'friendly' way of identifying or authenticating users who would not normally connect to your Wi-Fi network.
  • What security option should I use?It is critical that you secure your Wi-Fi network, as an attacker doesn't need to enter your premises to access it. A micro/small organisation (with only a handful of users) should be using WPA2 security, wheras a medium/large organisation would be better using RADIUS authentication against an external directory (such as Active DIrectory).
