Introduction

When your old computers and IT equipment are reaching the end of their life, don't throw them away with the rest of your rubbish. Consideration should be given to recycle the equipment and securely destroying the data stored on them.

When you buy new IT equipment, the retailer is legally obliged to help you dispose of the old item. However, with a mountain of old equipment to dispose of, it isn't always easy to track down the original retailer.

  • Why should I recycle?Any company that disposes of hazardous waste has a legal obligation to ensure redundant electronic equipment is disposed of inline with legislation, known as the WEEE Directive.
  • What is the WEEE directive?The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive (WEEE) became legislation in 2007, with the aim of reducing the amount of electrical waste being disposed of in ladfill sites. Companies can no longer dispose of this type of equipment with other general waste.
  • Do we need to register our company with the Environment Agency?No.
  • What is classed as hazardous/non-hazardous waste?Almost all electrical equipment is classed as non-hazardous waste, except for items such as CRT/TFP monitors, laptop screens and fluorescent tubes.
  • Has disposal changed since GDPR?Whilst GDPR itself hasn't had an affect on electrical disposal and recycling, it has had an affect on the data that is stored on the devices when they are disposed of. It is critical that remenant data on hard drives or flash media are securely wiped prior to disposal.
  • How should I dispose of our old equipment?Use a reputable disposal company that is ISO 27001 certified, and can provide you with a certificate to testify that any data has been securely destroyed.
