Active Directory

Introduction

Active Directory (AD) is a Microsoft product that stores computer names, user names, passwords, and other information in a central database so that security access information does not need to be duplicated on every machine. Its main use is to control access to network based resources (such as files, folders and printers).
Active Directory has several other services which are related to it, such as Domain Naming Service (DNS), Certificate Services, Active Directory Federation Services.

Domain or Workgroup

A workgroup is another Microsoft based product that works on a peer-to-peer basis. Unlike Active Directory, there is no centralised directory of users and computers. Each computer handles its own authentication (who can logon to it and access it over the network), but user accounts need to be created seperately on every computer.

Benefits

Centralised directory of users and computers.
Used by over 3 million organisations globally.
Highly customisable with multiple tiers and domains.
Can be run onsite on own hardware or in the cloud.
Active Directory uses a tiered layout consisting of domains, trees and forests to coordinate networked elements, each with their own set of objects and security.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the Active Directory?Active Directory (AD) is a Microsoft product that stores computer names, usernames, passwords, and other information in a central database.
  • Why is it important within a company?Because it can be used to control access to resources on the network (such as files & folders, computers, printers) in a very granular way.
  • Do I need Active Directory? If you have less than 5 computers, then it is quentionably if you need it (but the advantages might still outweigh the disadvantages). For a company with more than 5 computers, it is a must.
  • Can I use Linux or Apple Macs too?Yes, users can be authenticated on other operating systems beside Microsoft Windows. However, some limitations may apply, and you would benefit from having a Linux or Apple Mac server in addition to Active Directory.
